THE HUNTER NEVER LAYS HIMSELF OPEN TO BEING VICTIMIZED. IN HIS ACTIONS HE MAKES ALLOWANCE FOR THE UNEXPECTED AND IS THEREFORE NEVER TAKEN BY SURPRISE. IN THIS WAY HE AVOIDS MOST OF WHAT FOOLS REGARD AS ACCIDENTS.
To believe that we have all the time in the world is not only stupid, but also takes away our appreciation of life, for where there is no awareness of death, boredom and discontent quickly set in. The warrior knows that his death is constantly stalking him; therefore whatever time he has is a most priceless gift. Knowing that his time cannot last, the warrior savours his gift to the full, and enjoys every moment of this precious time. This is what is known as living on the edge.
A MAN CAN ONLY BE SURPRISED IF HE HAS NOT TAKEN THE UNEXPECTED INTO ACCOUNT. BECAUSE SURPRISE DRAINS PERSONAL POWER, A WARRIOR MUST INCLUDE THE UNEXPECTED IN HIS DECISIONS. THIS MEANS THAT A WARRIOR LIVES ON THE EDGE. A WARRIOR CAN LIVE ON THE EDGE BECAUSE HE IS HUMBLE AND FULLY AWARE.
Full awareness naturally also includes anticipating the unexpected, because the warrior knows he is living in a fluid universe pervaded by the unpredictable quirks of power. Therefore, whenever a warrior has to make a decision, he will always do so taking into account the fact that he does not presume to know beforehand what the outcome of his decision will be. By accepting the unknown the warrior never falls into the trap of assuming that he does not need to be fully aware.
